We’ve all been there – you want to hang a shelf, a picture or a mirror, you grab the first plug you can find, and the result leaves something to be desired. Choosing the right wall plug is the foundation of any solid job.

Why the Wall Plug Matters

A wall plug ensures the screw gets a firm grip in the wall. Without one (or with the wrong one), the joint gradually works loose – especially with heavier items, that can be dangerous.

Wall Types and the Right Choice

Brick or Concrete Wall

The simplest case. Use a standard nylon plug (typically 6–10 mm diameter). The key things are:

  • Drill with hammer action
  • Drill diameter = plug diameter
  • Drill depth = plug length + about 5 mm extra

Plasterboard (Drywall)

A standard plug won’t work here – the material is too soft. Solutions:

  • Butterfly (toggle) plug – opens up behind the board (suitable for lighter loads)
  • Molly bolt – screw-type variant, stronger
  • Drywall anchor (self-tapping) – for light items (up to ~15 kg)

Hollow Block (Aerated Concrete or Perforated Bricks)

The trickiest material. A standard plug will just drop into the cavity. Use:

  • Hollow-material plug – a special mechanism that expands inside the cavity
  • Or a chemical resin anchor – the most reliable solution for heavy loads

Practical Tip

Before drilling, check what the wall is made of. Simple test: tap the wall with your knuckle. Solid sound = brick or concrete wall; hollow sound = hollow block or plasterboard.
